Unveiling the Inner Artist: InterArts Cabinet of Curiosity

What These Eyes Are And What They Have Curated

By Dionne Hardy

These eyes are what do the looking.
These eyes do all the seeking.
These are the eyes that stare into the depths of one’s soul.
These EYES see EVERYTHING.
These eyes know you. These eyes know me.
These eyes are what see the different perspectives of reality.
These eyes know emotion.
These eyes know strength.
These eyes are what makes a person’s heart sank.
These eyes, my eyes are what guided me and helped me write these poems.
These eyes, my eyes have never steered me wrong.

What does it mean to be a young adolescent? Many people say that our lives are just black and white. But they’re much more than that. We go through heartaches and heartbreaks...stress from being inducted into the workforce. We go through bullying and peer pressure. Not knowing what path to take...who to turn to or look to for guidance...sometimes not even wanting to survive another day. But it’s all up to the person and their reaction to the situations they are placed in. So, what does it mean to be a young adolescent? It isn’t just black and white. Our lives are multicolored and they're filled with a bunch of light.

Smize with your eyes
Black girls with thick thighs
Afros and baby hairs
For ye do not tell me what to wear.

I am more than just my brown skin
Exaggerated full lips stopped with a grin.
I am more than just my thick wooly hair
Course but tamable, touch it if you dare.

I am more than my dark brown eyes.
My brain is filled with knowledge, they say I’m wise.

I am more than extra-long weave and artificial nails.
As I speak these words, my truth prevails.

These bags under my eyes tell stories.
Stories of a little brown girl with big hopes and aspirations.
Stories of a little brown girl laying down a foundation.

Stories that I hope are one day inspirational
Stories of a little brown girl that will never be erasable.

My stories have stories and their stories do too,
Sit back and relax as I brief a story to you.

I am not loud and ratchet.
I am tasteful and respectable.

I am not an angry black woman.
I am a passionate black woman.

I am not simple-minded.
I am sophisticated.

I will not be whoever society wants me to.
I will be whoever I want to be.
I will do whatever makes me happy.

I love my beautiful brown skin,
It is a gift so I embrace it.
If I was given a choice to pick my skin
There is no way I would change it.

Confidence comes from within.
Little brown girls, loving yourself is always a WIN.

I Am STRONG, I AM BLACK And I Am A WOMAN!

Intellectual for a reason... Detective pick apart the pieces. Had to cross some silly rabbits out my circle like they’re lethal.
don’t play man I do this, simple minded but talking ruthless. You ain’t got a career plan you a bum and get the boot sis.
Smart chick still talkin book spit. Could never be a bandwagon sis I got my own drift. Never needed fake friends, Byeee,  sis that’s spilled milk. If you don’t like it then that’s fine, keep yo lips zipped.
I’m a little ratchet, always sassy never flashy. Get a little wild but remember, keep it classy. You don’t need friends or a man to be happy. Unnecessary yelling makes my voice a little raspy. You nasty.
Get moody, maybe choosy but he chooses me. Ain’t got to do too much...I do enough. stay true to me. Always been wise and creative that’s like food to me. People come and go...Boo Hoo but get used to me.
